Abstract

THIS PROPOSAL IS TO ADDRESS THE FEASIBILITY OF WATER-REACTIVE GROUTS AS A "SMART" MATERIAL CAPABLE OF BEING PLACED DURING CONSTRUCTION BUT NOT ACTIVATED UNTIL A THREAT EVENT OCCURS WHICH DEGRADES THE ORIGINAL WATERTIGHT INTEGRITY. WHEN SUCH DEGRADATION OCCURS, IT WILL EXPOSE THE WATER-REACTIVE GROUT TO GROUNDWATER. THIS WILL TRIGGER THE HARDENING PROCESS WHICH WILL AUTOMATICALLY AFFECT A EAL AT THE LOCATION OF THE GROUNDWATER INTRUSION.
