Abstract
THE EFFICIENT AND RAPID DECHLORINATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN WASTEWATER STREAMS IS A PERSISTENT PROBLEM. THE MICROORGANISMS IN TYPICAL BIOLOGICAL OXIDATION SYSTEMS WILL CONSUME SUCH COMPOUNDS ONLY VERY SLOWLY, IF AT ALL. THIS PROPOSAL ADDRESSES THE FEASIBILITY OF USING ELECTROCHEMICALLY GENERATED SUPEROXIDE TO RAPIDLY DECHLORINATE RECALCITRANT ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. A NOVEL, COMPACT ELECTROCATALYTIC CELL IS PROPOSED FOR THIS SUPEROXIDE GENERATION. AFTER THE DECHLORINATION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY THIS ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESS, THE RESULTANT NONCHLORINATED PRODUCTS WOULD BE RAPIDLY CONSUMED BY THE BIOLOGICAL OXIDATION SYSTEM.
