Abstract

Development of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers for 1550nm communication applications has been hindered by the lack of high quality Bragg mirrors. Efforts for growing high quality InGaAsP/InP, SbGaAsAI/InGaAsP as well as wafer-bonding with GaAs/AIOx mirrors are on-going but significant breakthroughs in material quality and yield are needed before devices are produced. In addressing this challenge proposes a novel method for fabricating for 1550 involving post deposition of broad band, low loss mirrors using Ion-Beam Sputtering and flip-chip bonding process. Furthermore our Hybrid approach allows development of integrated microelectromechanical structures to allow 100 tuning of the lasing . In Phase I we will demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating fixed with optical pumping as well as the structures needed for tuning. In Phase we will develop fully functional tunable at 1550.
