Abstract

Clarapath has developed a novel high-throughput technique for gathering high-quality histopathological data at cellular resolution. Recognizing a critical gap in the available data to support the rapidly growing field of 3D bioprinting, we propose to automate our approach and optimize the resulting histopathology-based 3D models for 3D bioprinting applications. In Phase I, we will demonstrate feasibility by correlating the technical requirements and current functional capabilities of commercial 3D bioprinters with a design for a fully automated system of data gathering and 3D model generation. We will seek out close collaborative relationships with leading commercial 3D bioprinting companies, including the recipients of this award, in order to determine their specific needs and identify target tissues or organs that are of greatest interest to the field. In the Phase I Option period we will then choose a single target tissue to validate our approach and generate a histopathology-base 3D model of a piece of human tissue to be printed. In an anticipated Phase II of this project we will implement the fully automated system and generate complete 3D models of selected tissues of greatest interest to the field, thereby demonstrating the potential for commercialization.
