Abstract

The commercial marketplace has made tremendous advances in Virtual Reality (VR) technology and product maturity. VR is being used to enhance training in a number of areas including maintenance and operation of complex systems, but application of this technology to the training of dismounted soldiers has proven challenging. Fortunately, these advancements in VR technology now make possible the development of an Augmented Reality (AR) dismounted soldier training environment in which scenarios can be developed, refined and analyses to maximize training value using a constructive adversary.SA Photonics has designed a Wide Field of View (WFOV) Augmented Reality Display System (WARDS) using the latest advances in microdisplay and optics technology, which provides a field of view approaching the human visual field and the display brightness necessary for daytime augmented reality training. The system includes an Augment Reality Processor (ARP) readily configured to the specific interface and data protocol requirements of the training environment. The HMD including tracker mounts to the helmet using a standard night vision goggle mount. The lightweight processing unit can be directly mounted to the back of the vest or placed in a small backpack.
