Abstract

Medical moulage is used in medical training to simulate injuries or pathologies, however current moulage is static and does not provide the trainee feedback on the quality of care or ultimate outcome of that care. Allowing a trainee to witness the injury or pathology -morph- while treatment is being provided can provide feedback on any potential mistreatment and enhance the learning and proficiency of the caregiver. Currently there are no commercial training systems that -morph- throughout the medical simulation in response to trainee input. This training void has resulted in highly capable medical personal not being trained to the highest standard. In order to address the Army`s critical need for -Smart Morphing Medical Moulage-, Luna Innovations plans to extensively research the feasibility of developing new technologies for inclusion in a -Smart Morphing Medical Moulage- training system. Luna`s training system will consist of technologies that can accurately simulate a variety of wounds through their entire progression. These technologies include microencapsulation, mechanically responsive pigments, and click chemistry in addition to advanced electronics. Luna`s experience in developing low cost medical simulation products, advanced materials and electronics uniquely position Luna to provide a Smart Morphing Medical Moulage system to caregivers as soon as possible.
