Insects as an alternative protein source for animals

Beta Hatch, a small business funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is industrializing the production of insects as an alternative protein to feed animals.

Beta Hatch is developing technology to mass produce mealworms and use their waste as fertilizer. One third of the crops grown worldwide are used to feed animals, according to Beta Hatch.

Beta Hatch is supported by America’s Seed Fund powered by the NSF, a $200 million per year program that awards research and development grants to small businesses and startups, transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial and societal impact.
