Abstract

In cooperation with the Joint Improvised-threat Defeat Organization (JIDO) and the U.S. Army, IMSAR LLC demonstrated its radar systems' ability to successfully detect IED emplacements from the RQ-7B Shadow Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). As part of the Army’s ShadowSAR program, IMSAR operated and maintained these Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors for 4 ½ years in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Sentinel’s Freedom (OSF). In total, IMSAR collected and analyzed radar data from 7926 hours of route clearance patrols providing near real-time Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) intelligence. IMSAR has begun development of a glide-bomb with GPS guidance and options for active or semi-active radar seekers, referred to as the micro-Precision Strike Vehicle (µPSV), which could be deployed against a suspected IED. Leveraging past experience with IED detection, IMSAR proposes to use the NSP-5 to detect disturbances and verify IED emplacement, and in parallel further develop the µPSV to be used to strike and detonate IEDs in place. IMSAR can rapidly transition the µPSV to be deployable from any Group 3 or larger UAS to defeat suspected IEDs.
