The ability to discriminate between threatening and benign sources depends on the sensitivity, accuracy, and identification speed of the detection equipment. High energy resolution of the radionuclide sensor is necessary to decrease the likelihood of false identification. However, few scintillators achieve better than 3% energy resolution at 662 keV, and none exceed 2.5%. The goal of this effort is to identify and develop novel scintillators with that can achieve: (1) high energy resolutions of 2-2.5% at 662 keV, (2) high detection efficiency, (3) dual mode (neutron/gamma) detection, and (4) scaled growth to larger crystal sizes at low cost. The development and implementation of affordable scintillators with superior energy resolution and performance will appreciably contribute to the efficient identification and interdiction of SNM. This program will be a collaborative effort between CapeSym and Fisk University.
