Abstract

Overwhelming stress significantly impairs human performance and cognitive. For Airmen in the Battlefield Airmen training pipeline, this stress-induced mental degradation is a contributing factor in the large attrition rates due to unconscious self-initiated elimination (SIE). This SIE costs the Department of Defense (DoD) millions of dollars training soldiers who never complete the training. Beyond the training costs, overwhelming stress can impair soldier’s mental and physical faculties and can lead to serious injury or death due to impaired cognition and decision making in the field. This surge in stress cannot be measured via traditional means and is especially difficult to anticipate if it is an unconscious decision. Cornerstone Research Group (CRG) intends to build upon the extensive Phase I research into the biochemical processes involved in human threat response and develop, demonstrate, and validate a prototype biosensor system that can rapidly detect multiple stress biomarkers in high stress environments. By synergistically coupling stress biomarkers with rapid response detectors and non-invasive sampling, this platform technology will provide the Air Force, and broader DoD, with new insights into the stress state of individuals and the ability to correlate the impact of that condition with external conditions and to cognitive performance.
