Policiesnationwidearetargetingrapidadoptionofgrid-integratedbuildingstrategiestime-varying
electricitypricesbuildingelectrificationandresiliency.Butadvocatesworrythattop-down
innovationleavessmallerandmorevulnerablecommunitiesbehind. Thisprojectbringsaffordable
gridconnectivitytocornerstonesofruralcommunities:smallandmid-sizedcommercialbuildings
(SMSCB)thathavebeenunder-representedingridintegrationprojectstodate.Manyrural
communitieshaveolderbuildingstockandareattheendofpowerdistributionnetworks-meaning
energyburdenpowerqualityandoutagedurationtendtobeworseforruralcustomers.Outages
impactcommercialbuildingsystemssuchasrefrigerationthatarekeytoreducingfoodspoilage
andcontaminationinagriculturalproduction. Byshapingenergyusetobettermatchlocal
renewableoutputreduceenergycostsanddemandchargestheinnovationproposedinthisSBIR
lowerscommercialelectricalbillsforendusersandextendsthetimethatcriticalpowerbackupcan
reliablyprovidepowerduringoutagesanddisturbances. InPhaseICELdefinedamodel
architecturethatcanbereplicated—withoutsignificantcustomization—inotherbuildingsand
verifiedandoptimizedthatmodelarchitectureusingreal-worlddataandusecasesinSMSCBand
ruralcommunities.InPhaseIICELwilltesttheprototypeinfullfielddeploymentinadiverse
subsetofruralK12schoolsandmunicipalbuildingsverifythemodelperformanceanddevelopa
deploymentplan.ThisprojectaddressesUSDA'sobjectivetotoimprovethequalityoflifeinrural
Americabypromotingenergyefficiencyresiliencyandadoptionofrenewableenergyresources.
CELadvancesdeliberatestrategiestomaketechnologiesforenergyanddemandchargereduction
moreaffordableinordertomeettheneedsofthissignificantsegmentoftheUSbuildingstock.
