Abstract

During Phase I of NexTech’s project with ONR, NexTech developed a system concept based on its proprietary solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology capable of meeting the Navy’s energy density requirements for large-diameter unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) systems. Phase II of this project will include further system design and integration; including demonstration of an integrated SOFC stack and reformer. NexTech will partner with Plug Power and a military prime partner to increase the likelihood of success for integration of a system capable of operating in the unique environment of a UUV. The overall objective of Phase II will be to minimize risk associated with stack/reformer scale-up and system integration, and ultimately demonstrate a prototype system. Additionally, the system design will be refined to include components necessary to better meet application requirements as defined by military primes and ONR. Technology developed in this program will have a broad application to high efficiency power systems.
