Abstract

This Phase II SBIUR (Small Business Innovative Research) proposal is based on work accomplished by Foster-Miller, Inc. and Battelle Memorial Institute during a prior Phase I SBIR program under contract DTRS57-99-C-00090. The purpose of the Phase I program was to develop an in-vehicle sensor to measure roadway surface conditions and, from these measurements, determine the coefficient of friction between the tire and the roadway. Consequently, we developed an approach based on prior research efforts and simplified them by using newer technologies. The physical basis of our system depends on the coefficient of friction and slip and is supported by a hardware suite that consists of an electro-optical sensor, highway pavement databases, GPS receiver, and a method to determine ground speed. Applications for this pavement condition sensor include adaptive cruise control, safety systems for lateral/longitudinal crash avoidance and highway condition assessment for adverse weather treatment
