Abstract

Ultrafast imaging with concurrent signal processing in the IR and UV wavelengths is an important need for the development, control and evaluation of modern air-deliverable weapons systems. Unfortunately, current IR and UV detectors are relatively slow, have poor resolution, and are expensive. Similarly, conventional image signal processing equipment is relatively bulky, heavy and cumbersome. SMD proposes an ultra compact, large format (at least 512 x 512 pixel) imager capable of operation in the IR or UV ranges at ultrahigh speed operation with signal processing of up to 10,000 frames per second, based on an extraordinarily compact silicon imager geometry with enormous integrated signal processing capability, within a one inch cube.
