Abstract

The subject SBIr topic requires design development of a high torque density electric traction motor. The proposed concept is for a direct drive traction motor with a maximum torque capacity of approximately 3840 ft-lbs., which matches the allowed motor volume of 2.4 ft(3) to result in torque density of 1600 ft.-lbs./ft(3). The new concept has features intended to overcome limitations in present inverter-driven PM-DC motor technology. Thus, optimum utilization of magnetic circuits, reduction of magnetic core losses and elimination of pulsating torques and harmonic problems may be achieved. This will also permit the motor's power controller to be integral to the machine. The external portion of the controls will consist of low energy circuitry. The design development will be carried out tot the extent of supporting development of a prototype motor which will not require reduction gears to deliver the required torque. The design concept will be thoroughly evaluated by performance analyses and models including structural, mechanical speed-torque, electro-magnetic, heat transfer, control system dynamics and electric drive power flow.
