FIELD-PORTABLE INSTRUMENTATION FOR METAL ANALYSIS
FIELD-PORTABLE INSTRUMENTATION SUITABLE FOR ONSITE METAL ANALYSIS IS NEEDED. SUCH INSTRUMENTATION SHOULD PERMIT (1) ANALYSIS IN REAL TIME, (2) SIMULTANEOUS DETECTION OF VARIOUS METALS, AND (3) DETECTION LEVELS DOWN TO PARTS PER BILLION. IN PHASE I, THE SUITABILITY OF AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MEASUREMENT CONCEPT TO ACHIEVE THESE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE ESTABLISHED. PHASE I CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING TASKS: (1) USE OF PLATINUM MICROELECTRODES TO STUDY DETECTION OF SELECTED METALS; (2) FABRICATION OF MICROSENSOR BAND ELECTRODE ARRAYS; AND (3) EVALUATION OF THE MICROSENSOR BAND ELECTRODE ARRAYS. FUTHERMORE, IT WILL BE DEMONSTRATED THAT THE ELECTRODE CONFIGURATION USED IN THIS INSTRUMENT IS ECONOMIC TO MANUFACTURE.
