A Remarkable Material for Advanced CMC Propulsion Systems

The development of a remarkable Ti3SiC2 material for use in ceramic matrix composite (CMC) fiber coatings and matrix laminates is proposed. This material possesses a myriad of favorable properties for high temperature structural applications - demonstrating machinability, strength, ductility, oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance never before observed in a single phase material. Property measurements on hot-pressed samples cited in a recent article "Synthesis and Characterization of a Remarkable Ceramic: Ti3SiC2", reflected a potential opportunity for ceramic Matrix Composites. In conjunction with Dr J. Lackey at the Georgia Technical Institute, CCI will demonstrate that Ti3SiC2 can mitigate two of the major limitations of Cf/SiC and SiCf/SiC CMCs for thermal protection and propulsion system applications; the lack of a tough. long life fiber matrix interface coating and particle impact susceptibility. In order to achieve the IHPRPT objectives, it will be essential to develop and integrate new and advanced materials such as Ti3SiC2 and to address the critical issues relating to CMC applications and fabrication.
