Modula-S SustainmentBox: Corrosion Care Container

The Army requires operational infrastructure to function in austere environments and the capabilities to maintain the functionality of equipment and facilities while in the field. Corrosion repair and prevention is a significant challenge, especially in tropical and sub-tropical environments. Modula-S will develop a modular, rapidly deployable solution for the Armyĺs need to repair and prevent corrosion in the field. Modula-S has designed and tested ultra-efficient NetZero modular buildings. We are adapting this technology to build and test an innovative battery deployment system in collaboration with Seimens (SBIR A234-P010-1359). Relying on our expertise from these projects, we will design plans for a Tricon/Bicon ISO system of connectable modules for corrosion prevention, repair components, coating materials, and pressurized systems. These modules will be designed using our proprietary R-60 building envelope technology to maximize passive energy performance and interface with the power generation module from our current SBIR.As the key part of the building envelope system, Modula-S has developed a proprietary R-60, 6ö thin, lightweight, super-insulation technology. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) tested and validated our technology independently. With the most recent data from our complete building test at the Cold Regions Research andá Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Fairbanks, Alaska, and at AFCEC Tyndall AFB, Florida, our thermal technology performance is fully field-tested and verified. We integrate this proprietary technology with smart building systems to design an optimal building envelope that can regulate internal temperature and humidity to maximize the life cycle performance of any contained components. The envelope helps protect components from vibration stress and the smart systems can monitor conditions during transit. Our Tricon/Bicon ISO system will use this building envelope technology to house the complete sets of components for our Corrosion Care Container SustainmentBox solution.3 Tricon or 2 Bicon units can be linked together, or split off for individual mission purposes. The Tricons and Bicons can be made mobile by being mounted on a dedicated trailer and moved as needed. Transportation will be provided by any available container transport system, and individual Tricons can be moved via standard 10,000 lbs. forklifts. Replacement units for any Tricons or Bicons can be sent as needed to resupply expendable supplies or provide more equipment. The whole system is modular to provide the most flexibility possible. Together, they will repair the effects of sun, salt, sand, and sea.

Modula-S SustainmentBox: PopUp Power Platform

The SustainmentBox is a hybrid power, water, and heat generator designed to combat the “tyranny of distance” inherent in US global warfighting. Expeditionary base facilities use up to 66% of the electricity generated by diesel fuel, which must be transported vast distances by air and water. Reducing the energy demands of buildings, and therefore the need for liquid fuel to meet these demands, will have many positive ripple effects throughout Army supply chains, and reduce the great strain and dangerous risks of fuel transportation.The SustainmentBox building blocks are TRICONs (modular containers) which house Cummins generators, Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries for back-up power storage, Sodium batteries for peak load shaving and rapid energy discharge, heat pumps, a clean water filtration system (WOW/DRIPS), and a hot water storage "thermal battery.”Inputs are fuel (diesel and/or JP8), air, and any type of water, clean or contaminated. Solar power and existing AMMPS generators can also be linked to the system. Outputs are 3 phase AC electricity (208/120-volt AC), 48Vdc (with other DC voltages available), clean potable water, hot water, chlorine, cool and hot air, and rapid-discharge, capacitor-like tactical power.While traditional Army deployments use 60kw Generators to power up to 3 shelters, the SustainmentBox system can power 6-9 shelters off the same generator capacity by storing energy in LFP batteries, shaving peak loads using rapid-discharge Sodium batteries, recovering waste heat from generators to warm up water, and storing hot water in a super-insulated “thermal battery” storage tank. The SustainmentBox provides clean potable water from the WOW/DRIPS filtration system, and a reliable supply of hot water as part of its core outputs. In the field, you need two things to survive and thrive, electricity and clean water. The SustainmentBox provides both and more.Overall, Modula-S will integrate cutting-edge COTS technologies in reliable and resilient modular systems that can meet military and commercial needs in austere environments. Our ultra efficient systems minimize energy needs, and therefore relieve supply chain pressures, to facilitate smooth and reliable operation in any region. Soldiers need two things to survive and effect mission assurance: electrical power and clean water. Based on adopted Army policies, equipment needs to function from -60°F to 127°F, in the arctic, jungle and desert. The SustainmentBox not only provides the two necessities of clean water and power, we also provide them far more efficiently, using a systems integration design where all of the parts are complementary, both individually efficient and efficient as an integrated system. The best way to reduce supply chain risk is to reduce the quantity of liquid fuel needed, which reduces the tyranny of distance and the unacceptable risk of long fuel supply chains in the Pacific. The SustainmentBox supports more troops on less fuel.

Modula S - PopUp Power Platform

The Army requires operational infrastructure to function in the hottest climates on earth. Electricity is needed for communications, capabilities and sustainment in any theatre. The heat of desert and tropical climates creates problems for power generation and storage in batteries. Air temperatures can be up to 127░F and extreme sun exposure can push surface temperatures above 150░F. Thermal stress puts an enormous strain on equipment, which will not work efficiently, or at all, under these conditions. The Army requires that electric power systems continue functioning during a power outage. Utility power systems are most likely to fail or brownout at elevated temperatures. Resilient backup power modules can provide uninterrupted power in the event of a power failure, but will they work effectively at elevated temperatures? Batteries integrated with solar provide a sustainable way to generate immediate local power that helps combat the tyranny of distance. Yet batteries have numerous problems at elevated temperatures: a shortened lifespan of 50%+, thermal runaway (leading to fire or explosion), and automatic shutdown are only a few problems. The challenge is to keep batteries operating in their optimal performance range. Our goal is to achieve reliable passive performance while using as little energy as possible to create the resilience and energy security required for mission-critical operations at all Army bases. Modula S has designed and is currently testing ultra-efficient NetZero modular buildings. We propose to adapt this technology to build and test an innovative battery deployment system. The system maximizes the functionality of any battery, enabling the use of solar in addition to liquid fuel energy sources. This system will significantly reduce the liquid fuel demands of expeditionary bases, providing a solution to the logistical problems of liquid fuel dependency and the mitigation of carbon emissions. Modula S has developed a proprietary component of the solution: R-60, 6.5ö thin, lightweight, super-insulation technology. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) tested and validated our technology independently first. Modula S FX-MPB/H2F - A NetZero Ready H2F Facility

The Army desires a new approach to the construction of the H2F facility. While standard construction practices only result in expensive, medium-quality buildings, Modula S's cutting-edge prefabricated modular design and construction processes create a state-of-the-art facility to overcome this hurdle, providing an H2F facility that meets the Army's exacting requirements at the requested cost while attaining exceptional NetZero Ready performance.  The Modula S supply chain is well established and can process production of the H2F facility quickly and efficiently. We understand that time and cost are essential factors for the H2F initiative. As a result, Modula S can deliver the first building within six months of the construction contract signing. In addition to delivering at the H2F facility at the requested capital cost, Modula S also provides an advanced level of NetZero performance to ensure the long-term energy efficiency of the H2F facility. Passive efficiency keeps operating costs low and ensures that the Army maximizes its return on investment. We are well aware of the challenges associated with traditional construction methods and believe that the Modula S modular solution is the best way to achieve the desired cost, quality, and performance goals.

Focus Area #4: Base of the Future, Passive Performance NetZero Ready Autonomous Expeditionary Buildings

  The Air Force operates in extremely challenging environments worldwide.  Currently, private sector architects and engineers are building cost-effective NetZero buildings for private clients.  The Air Force needs to invest in demonstration projects of these private-sector technologies to evaluate their performance in the field under extreme conditions.  Passive ultra-high-performance buildings are an integrated technology solution which requires the demonstration and evaluation of the whole system.  The opportunity for the Air Force is to adopt commercial technologies in order to create a NetZero RLB, relocatable building system, where the exact same building can be deployed either in the desert or the arctic.  One product, a single design for worldwide deployment ensuring mission success. The challenge is to integrate commercial technologies into a new NetZero RLB capability and form factor to solve the deployment problems of the DoD and create the durable resilient expeditionary base of the future. The enabling technology which Modula S developed is a 6.5” thick, low cost, lightweight, code compliant insulation assembly rated at R-60.  The residential version of this system is in use and has been tested at extreme temperatures, -30°F to 120°F, by LLNL, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Modula S proposes to implement our commercial technical capabilities by creating the Modula FLEX FX relocatable building system for the DoD.  This system is manufactured in the United States, is ISO certified for worldwide shipping and can be rapidly deployed.  The FLEX FX RLB is a unique product specifically designed for extreme environmental conditions to meet the needs of military and humanitarian disaster relief missions. The Modula S ecosystem provides a superior solution for expeditionary bases today and as a platform technology we can implement emerging future capabilities which the Air Force will be deploying at expeditionary locations worldwide.
