Audio and Visual Recognition for the Advancement of Disaster Response and Humanitarian Relief
Amount: $149,489 Topic: AFX20D-TCSO1
In disaster response situations it is often necessary to use eVTOL/UAM vehicles to search for and identify humans when debris makes affected areas inaccessible on foot. We propose an auditory assist mechanism to detect the presence of human vocal sounds in the presence of background noise paired with visual recognition capabilities. In an initial phase, we will assess the ability of trained machine learning platforms to determine whether a human voice is present in a synthetic training set, consisting of ambient sound with or without voices added. The second phase will incorporate the visual spectrum and training a machine learning platform to use audio cues paired with automated video analysis. If successful, in the following phase we would seek to integrate this technology into a prototype vocal and computer vision subsystem for search-and-rescue applications. We would leverage both the audio and visual inputs of the scene to understand if an individual or group of individuals needs rescue.

Expedited Base Entry Using Face Recognition and Touchless Systems
Amount: $999,102 Topic: AF20R-DCSO1
Security Forces Squadron has a national defense-related mission need in the area of increased touchless entry points for base access/entry capabilities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the ability for individuals to expeditiously gain entry to the installation using Trueface’s facial recognition with touchless entry to eliminate the spreading of the virus due to contact at the base entry points on two Air Force bases. Trueface is the leading US-based facial recognition company with a focus on frictionless authentication in both physical and digital environments. Leaning on its deployment expertise, Trueface will partner with a GSA-scheduled kiosk manufacturer to install a contactless fast lane that uses face recognition as the authenticating credential. The installation of Trueface’s TRL 7 equivalent contactless facial recognition will achieve the mission needs of increased touchless entry points and expeditious ingress, and also reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 and viruses like it amongst Security Forces and possibly the greater base by no longer requiring them to check individual CAC cards and be in close proximity to those obtaining entry to the base.

Open Call for Innovative Defense-Related Dual-Purpose Technologies/Solutions with a Clear Air Force Stakeholder Need
Amount: $49,646 Topic: AF191-005
Founded as a smart access control hardware solution, Chui, in 2013, the company was the very first to commercialize facial recognition. Four years later, after realizing the number of devices that would soon connect to the internet would grow exponentially, the team refocused their efforts on software that would lay on top of any connected device, transforming the data transmitted into intelligent action points. In June 2017, Chui rebranded as Trueface, solely committing to deploying facial recognition and computer vision solutions to businesses’ existing cameras. Trueface now leads the market with face recognition in constrained environments, object recognition, threat detection, emotion analysis, license plate recognition and others.
