A Novel Biological Therapy (PC-01) for Ocular Surface Regeneration

Amount: $749,888   Topic: AFX20D-TCSO1

US Air Force service members, particularly those in deployed settings, suffer a relatively high incidence rate of ocular trauma caused by acute ocular surface injuries from mechanical blast, chemical or thermal burns. In addition, other ophthalmic chronic conditions such as dry eye syndrome cause a variety of symptoms and/or visual impairment and are prevalent in US service members and veterans. If untreated, these conditions can cause significant eye damage and visual impairment. PlasmaCord’s proposed non-defense solution (easily adapted to military use) is a novel biological eye drop therapy named PC-01. The delivering system consists of a kit containing a dual-chamber syringe and a dispensing dropper, which allows patients to store the drug at room temperature for several months and activate the product once needed. While there are other existing therapies on the market, their levels of bioactivity are relatively low and these solutions also refrigeration, impeding the ability to transport the product and stock it for emergencies in remote environments. For these reasons, PlasmaCord expects to make an impact in the growing chemical burn and dry eye syndrome markets, together worth over US$ 2.5 Billion in 2019.
