AbstractThe Common Parts Catalog Part Design Class will be a platform-independent solution offering an internet accessible part design database that can be used with any one of the Common Parts Catalog solutions currently being offered to the shipbuilding community. Atlantec-es proposes to develop the taxonomy, data element dictionary and prototype database for the CPC Part Design Class. The approach is unique - rather than attempt to develop a "universal" standard, Atlantec-es will develop a "de facto" standard, which will be based on a combination of the XML standards developed to support the STEP application protocols and the actual attribute definitions and formats used by the leading ship design software systems. This will allow the vendors to upload XML data, accessible by any shipyard or design agent, through any ship design software, to create product model objects of the selected equipment. These models can then be easily - and accurately - mapped into an engine room, HVAC system, or other equipment space. Potential cost savings are significant; importing designs directly from the vendor would reduce engineering design time as well as minimizing potentially costly errors.
