Abstract
THE ACTIVE SONARS TYPICALLY USED ON SUBMARINES OPERATE AT FREQUENCIES HIGH ENOUGH TO BE DIFFICULT IF NOT PRESENTLY IMPOSSIBLE TO MODEL ACCURATELY WITH FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS. LIKEWISE BEAM AND CYLINDER MODELS PROVIDE INADEQUATE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE HIGH FREQUENCY BEHAVIOR OF PLATE AND FRAME VIBRATIONS. THE APPLICATION OF THE AARC STATISTICAL ENERGY ANALYSIS PROGRAM WHICH INCLUDES BENDING, LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE SHEAR IN-PLANE MODES IS PROPOSED AS THE MAJOR MODELLING TOOL, WITH ADDITIONAL INPUTS FROM FINITE ELEMENT MODELS AS NEEDED. SINCE SEA MAY BE SOME WHAT UNFAMILIAR TO SOME USERS, A USERS INSTRUCTION MANUAL IS ALSO PROPOSED TO BOTH PROVIDE A REVIEW OF SEA PRINCIPLES AND PROVIDE APPLICATION GUIDANCE THROUGH MODELLING EXAMPLES.
