Abstract
Army helicopter pilots are inundated with information in the cockpit, and more is coming. With new technology constantly pushing new information into the cockpit, there is an ever-increasing demand for smarter management of that information before it overwhelms the pilot. Too much “head-down time” spent navigating or deciphering cockpit display information is bad for the pilot and the mission. Unless the information provided is relevant to the current mission and task, pilots will only be distracted from flying their aircraft. With all the cockpit information to sort through, critical decision points may be missed in the course of flying a mission. For this work, we propose to develop display management technology that will be used to assist in tracking and displaying information relevant to critical decision points: notifying a pilot when a decision point is imminent, providing information relevant to making the decision, and giving alerts if required information is not available prior to the decision point becoming active. We aim to design a general framework for this capability, instantiating it for the particular domain of Army Aviations, but reusable in other domains.
