Abstract
THE PROPOSED PROGRAM INVESTIGATES COST-EFFECTIVE METHODS TO MITIGATE OR OBVIATE POST-CRASH JET FUEL FIRES THROUGH THE USE OF FUEL ADDITIVES, NONSTRUCTURAL WING TANK MODIFICATIONS, ETC., OR THROUGH EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT CONTROL AND EXTINGUISHMENT OF THE JET FUEL-FED FIRE. A SYSTEMS APPROACH STUDYING THE MOST PROMISING METHODS SUCH ASTHE FOLLOWING WILL BE UNDERTAKEN: 1)LIMITING OR PREVENTING FUEL TANK LEAKAGE; 2)REDUCING FUEL FLAMMABILITY; 3)ISOLATIONOF THE FUEL FROM AREA WHERE IT MAY BE IGNITED OR CREATE A HAZARD IF IGNITED; AND/OR 4)SUPPRESSING SOURCES OF IGNITION.FURTHER THIS CONTRACT WILL QUALIFY FOR NEW YORK STATE SBIR FUND MATCHING PROGRAM WHICH CAN DOUBLE THE R&D ON THIS TOPOIC WITHOUT THE FAA EXPENDING FUNDS ABOVE THE ORIGINAL SBIR CONTRACT.
