Abstract
CURRENTLY AVAILABLE PORTABLE DC DEFIBRILLATORS ARE CUMBERSOME IN EMERGENCY VEHICLES, ROOMS AND MEDICAL AIRCRAFT. POWER SOURCE AND CAPACITIVE DISCHARGE SYSTEMS PRESENTLY SEVERLY LIMIT REDUCTION IN DEFIBRILLATION SIZE. PROPOSED PHASE I EFFORT WILL DESIGN AND DEVELOP A HIGH CAPACITY, HIGH ENERGY DENSITY RATE PRIMARY BATTERY SYSTEM PER UNIT VOLUME. THIS BATTERY WILL BE COUPLED TO A DC-DC CONVERTER PROVIDING 400 WATT-SEC OF ENERGY AVAILABLE FOR DEFIBRILLATION. TOTAL MINIATURE PORTABLE DEFIBRILLATOR VOLUME IS ANTICIPATED TO BE 115 CUBIC INCHES, EXCLUDING ELECTRODE PADDLES. THE PRIMARY BATTERY HAS AN EXPECTED 6 MINUTE LIFE, A 5 YEAR SHELF LIFE, AND IS DISPOSIBLE.
