Abstract
THE COMMERCIAL USE OF ENTOMOGENOUS NEMATODES FOR EFFECTIVE BIO-CONTROL OF AGRICULTURAL INSECT PESTS IS DEPENDENT ON DEVELOPING NEW LARGE-SCALE AND ECONOMICAL PRODUCTION METHODS. BIOSIS HAS OBTAINED ENCOURAGING RESULTS IN THE LIQUID CULTURE OF NEOAPLECTANA CARPOCAPSAE WHICH COULD PROVIDE L LARGE NUMBERS OF NEMATODES AT COSTS COMPETITIVE WITH CHEMI ICAL INSECTICIDES. THE OBJECTIVE OF PHASE I OF THIS PROPOSALIS TO DEFINE CULTURE PARAMETERS FOR PILOT PRODUCTION DESIGN.MODEL LIQUID CULTURE SYSTEMS WILL BE USED TO (1) OPTIMIZE T THE NUTRIENT SOURCE, (2) DETERMINE AERATION AND MIXING REQUIREMENTS, AND (3) IDENTIFY ENVIRONMENTAL CUES FOR INFECTIVE JUVENILE PRODUCTION. MODEL LIQUID CULTURE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE CAPACITY AND EFFICIENCY OF THIS NOVEL APPLICATION OF FERMENTATION TECHNOLOGY.
