Abstract
MOTION IS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE OVERALL IMAGE UNDERSTANDING (IU) PROBLEM WHICH CAN BE USED TO DIRECTLY DERIVE BOTH SURFACE DEPTH AND ORIENTATION. IN ORDER TO EXTRACT DEPTH FROM MOTION IN REAL-TIME, SPECIALIZED HARDWAREWILL BE REQUIRED. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO USE VERY LARGE SCALE INTEGRATION (VLSI) AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) TO IMPLEMENT A REAL-TIME DEPTH PERCEPTION ALGORITHM. THE ABILITY TO EXTRACT DEPTH IN REAL TIME FROM ASCENE WILL ENHANCE THE CAPABILITIES OF CURRENT IU SYSTEMS. THIS RESEARCH WILL FIND APPLICATION IN MANY AREAS INCLUDING MOBILE ROBOTS FOR HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS, INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION AND MILITARY APPLICATIONS.
