Abstract
Boston Applied Technologies Inc. (BATI) proposes a novel approach to configure an optical smoke meter for smoke number measurement. In the proposed smoke meter, a light beam with modulated polarization is incident onto the exhaust plume, the lightscattered by the smoke particles is collected to a detector array via optic fibers coupling. In this instrument, a solid-state polarization modulator using high performance electro-optical ceramics, OptoCeramicr materials, will enable the optical smokemeter be fast, compact and operated under harsh conditions. The proposed approach will provide Air Force a high performance and reliable system for in situ smoke number measurement for jet engine exhaust measurement. The approach will also provide analternative for other commercial combustion exhaust monitoring as well as for particle analysis and environmental monitoring.
