Abstract70114 Electricity consumed for lighting applications represents more that 20 percent of total U.S. electric energy production. Significant energy savings could accrue if Internet communications protocols could be developed to allow building-wide systematic dimming. This project will develop a Micro-Java Building Environment Controller that can monitor and control 16,000 or more devices and allows each sensor measurement or controller to be individually accessed over the Internet. Phase I will result in an architecture and design specification showing how the proposed Micro-Java Building Environment Controller combines secure Internet communication protocol, intra-building communications over AC power lines, and embedded Java controllers to provide a solution to this lighting control problem. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should allow consumers and businesses to intelligently monitor and manage their electricity use and to achieve a substantial reduction in energy consumption. The Micro-Java Building Environment Controller opens up new opportunities for intelligently tracking and controlling building lighting usage.
