Abstract70672 Dynamic pressure sensors are a critical supporting technology for achieving increased efficiency, reduced emissions, and lower operating costs in advanced gas turbines. In order to understand and control the combustion process, while maximizing efficiency and simultaneously reducing emissions, the sensors must respond to high frequency pressure oscillations in close proximity to the combustion environment. Current sensors are not capable of operating under these conditions. This project will use high temperature materials, such as silicon nitride and refractory oxides, in various combinations to produce a high temperature capacitance-type pressure gauge. Phase I will evaluate the feasibility of using silicon carbide as a pressure sensing diaphragm material in conjunction with high temperature dielectrics. Processes for joining these materials will be evaluated, and preliminary mechanical and electrical behavior will be studied. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The high temperature dynamic pressure sensors should lead to an increased understanding of the turbine engine-operating environment. This will allow techniques such as lean burn combustion to be used safely and reliably, leading to improved energy utilization, lower operating costs, and a cleaner environment.
