Abstract

Ballistic Missile Defense Systems (BMDS) Kinetic Warheads (KWs) use Navy Ship Board compliant controllable Solid propellant Divert and Attitude Control Systems (SDACS) to maneuver the KW for intercepts. However, solid propulsion system architectures have inherent performance limitations relative to higher performing liquid propellant DACS. To improve controllable solid propulsion for future long duration DACS missions, it is the goal of MDA and industry to discover new technologies that improve 1) operating time, 2) mass fraction, 3) performance, 4) cost, and 5) mission assurance while maintaining the storability, safety, and insensitivity advantages of a solid propulsion system. To address these needs, Valley Tech Systems (VTS) has developed, through multiple SBIR programs, a new Lightweight Long Duration ACS solid propellant propulsion system enabled by an innovative Hot Gas Valve design that controls multiple solid propellant ignitions, extinguishments and overall control of packaged total propellant impulse. This Phase II SBIR will upgrade the new long duration HGV design with an additional Valve Circuit, called the Divert Subsystem Ignition Valve (DSIV), that operationally couples with the ACS to provide on-demand divert subsystem ignitions without needing additional ignitor componentry and hardware.
