Abstract
LUBRICANT QUALITY SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCES THE RELIABILITY, LIFE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF VIRTUALLY ALL SYSTEMS. HOWEVER, THERE EXISTS NO RELIABLE, ON-LINE PERFORMANCE MONITORING TECHNIQUE FOR REDUCING UNSCHEDULED DOWNTIME AND IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY. THIS RESEARCH STUDIES THE FEASIBILITY OF MONITORING THE MANYCHANGES WHICH TAKE PLACE DURING THE SERVICE LIFE OF A LUBRICATING OIL BY MONITORING COLOR CHANGES IN DYED IONOMER FILMS. IF SUCCESSFUL, THIS RESEARCH WILL DEMONSTRATE THAT SENSOR DEVICES UTILIZING LIGHT FIBERS COATED WITH DYED IONOMERS CANFOLLOW THE CHANGES THAT TAKE PLACE IN A LUBRICANT DURING THELIFE OF THE LUBRICANT.
