Research Institution
The overall objective of this proposal is to develop a high temperature, motor drive based on silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors for controlling a switched reluctance motor (SRM). This motor drive will be suitable for use in either anelectromechanical actuator (EMA) or an electrohydraulic actuator (EHA). The proposed Phase II effort focus is the additional research and development needed to increase the level of maturity and to reduce the risk in the application of our Phase I SiCmotor drive technology. To increase the level of maturity of our Phase I SiC motor drive technology, it is proposed to increase the power rating and operating temperature of the power electronics and to add sensor-less control to the control electronics. To reduce the risk in the application of our Phase I SiC motor drive technology, it is proposed to integrate the motor drive with a switched reluctance motor in Mechatronic Systems' laboratory. The specific objectives of the program are the design of anengineering prototype silicon carbide motor drive, the fabrication and testing of the hardware and software for the motor drive, and the subsystem integration tests.
