Abstract
For this Phase II effort TRS Technologies, Inc., in collaboration with Rochester University, the Pennsylvania State University Electro-Optics Center and Penn State Applied Research Laboratory, will develop manufacturing processes to fabricate single crystal piezoelectric components with Zero Surface Defects (ZSD). During Phase I we showed that such crystals have 3 times the mechanical strength of conventional PZT ceramics. During this Phase II program TRS will take the laboratory process for making ZSD crystal and develop it into a volume manufacturing process. Technical routes, including multi wire saw optimization, fine back grinding, damage-free polishing and chemical etching will be developed to establish production processes for ZSD crystals, which will result in a new generation of Sonar transducers with unprecedented improvements in source level, bandwidth, and reliability all in considerably smaller transducer sizes and at much less input power than is currently possible. TRS will also demonstrate the advantages of ZSD crystal for improving yields in medical ultrasound transducer dicing operations and (during the Phase II Options) for improving the power and duty cycling handling capability and improving the reliability of high power sonar transducers.
