Abstract
THIS PROGRAM IS BASED ON THE DISCOVERY OF VARISTOR CHARACTERISTICS AT 4.2 DEGREES K IN A NEW ZNO CERAMIC COMPOSITION, AND ROUGH ESTIMATES SUGGEST THAT A SMALL (-0.1 CM) CRYOVARISTOR DEVICE BASED ON THIS MATERIAL WOULD SWITCH AT -4 V AND CARRY -10 KA. IT IS PLANNED TO MEASURE THE ELECTRICAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF THIS ZNO CERAMIC AT HELIUM TEMPERATURES, INCLUDING MEASUREMENTS IN INTENSE MAGNETIC FIELDS AND PRESSURE- DEPENDENT MEASUREMENTS. THE ELECTRICAL DATA WILL BE USED TO CALCULATE HEAT DISSIPATION IN THE DEVICE. RESULTS WILL BE SUPPLIED TO FERMILAB FOR USE IN A COIL SIMULATION PROGRAM. THE MEASUREMENTS NOT ONLY WILL PROVIDE A DATA BASE FOR LATER WORK BUT ALSO WILL BE OF BROAD INTEREST IN SOLID-STATE PHYSICS.
