Abstract
CeraNova Corporation proposes to develop an array of rapid deployment, highly loaded, structural foams and/or gels for protection of military troops and equipment. Stable foams can be produced at very high rates, with very short drying/curing times. Opportunities exist for hard, dense foams (>30 lb/ft(3)) in areas such as ballistic protection, impact resistance, thermal and noise insulation. Super-absorbent gel-forming powerders (SAP) have the ability to swell, absorbing 100 times their own weight in liquid. Either of these materials can be produced with many tailored properties, such as open or closed cell structure, low or high density, low to high stiffness, and controllable stability over time. Cera Nova plans to research a number of rapid drying/gelling systems which are suitable for low cost military deployment.
