Abstract

Team medical support operations are in a curious position. Their importance in future emergencies, from natural disasters to military environments, is becoming more and more evident as our reliance on the capabilities that high technological assets give us increases. However, for all this importance, it is tricky to determine appropriate doctrine for emergency medical support operations given the difficulty and cost of performing them. In such a situation, simulation is an obvious tool to bring to bear. Fortunately, after almost a decade of intense development driven by the consumer game market, technology has matured to the point that simulation is a viable option without a giant price tag. Still, the creation of such simulations is a difficult process that requires a fine balancing act of content development, real-time performance requirements, and domain fidelity. Again, we find some solace in the gaming market, where many of the thorny issues of interactive, real-time software development have been pruned. In this proposal we discuss particular techniques and procedures that we will make use of to meet the OSD’s needs as described in the solicitation, OSD06-H04 – Software to Assess Readiness and Train Medical Support Operations Teams.
