Abstract
THE EFFORT IS TO DEVELOP A COMPACT, SIMPLE-TO-USE, ECONOMIC SPECTROPHOTOMETER BASED ON THE USE OF ACOUSTOOPTIC TUNABLE FILTERS AS SPECTRAL SELECTION ELEMENTS. THESE ACOUSTOOPTIC DEVICES WILL REPLACE THE CONVENTIONAL GRATING MONOCHROMATORS AND WILL RESULT IN SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS. A MAJOR FEATURE OF THESE DEVICES IS THEIR EXTREMELY SMALL SIZE COMPARED TO A GRATING MONOCHROMATOR. FURTHERMORE THEY ARE OF ALL SOLID STATE CONSTRUCTION, AND ARE ELECTRONICALLY TUNABLE WITH NO MOVING PARTS. IN ADDITION TO SEQUENTIAL WAVELENGTH SCANNING THE DEVICE WOULD BE CAPABLE OF RANDOM-ACCESS WAVELENGTH SWITCHING WITH MICROSECOND ACCESS TIME. THE INNOVATIVE USE OF ACOUSTOOPTIC TUNABLE FILTERS WILL RESULT IN A COMPACT, PORTABLE RUGGED, HIGH PERFORMANCE INSTRUMENT AT REASONABLE COST.
