Abstract

When completed, the work outlined in this Phase II proposal will provide a cylinder kit model that can be utilized to: (1) predict wear rates for a range of currently utilized ring/liner material tribological couples; (2) consider the effect of third-body abrasives on wear rate (including abrasives from deposits formed on piston lands as well as soot from the lubricating oil); (3) predict residence time of the gas/oil mixture between rings and the resultant rate of deposit formation in the piston land area; and (4) provide a quantitative rather than qualitative prediction of oil consumption.
