Abstract
THE GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO FABRICATE A HIGH-SENSITIVITY NANOPROBE WITH THE CAPABILITY OF DIRECTLY DETERMINING THE LATERAL LOCATION OF ATOMS AND MOLECULES ON NONCONDUCTING SURFACES WITH EXTREMELY GOOD SPATIAL RESOLUTION (100 NM) AND VERY HIGH SENSITIVITY (ATOMOLE). THE NANOPROBE COMBINES SUB-PICOSECOND LASER TECHNIQUES WITH FOCUSED ION BEAMS FOR IMAGING APPLICATIONS. NO ONE HAS SATISFACTORILY DONE THIS. A POST-IONIZATION, HIGH-INTENSITY ULTRASHORT PULSE LASER SOURCE IS BEING DEVELOPED. THE LASER SOURCE PARAMETERS ARE BEING OPTIMIZED IN ORDER TO BOOST THE NANOPROBE SENSITIVITY. THE RESULTING NANOPROBE WILL EXHIBIT TWO TO THREE ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE IMPROVEMENT IN SENSITIVITY OVER SYSTEMS WITH IDENTICAL SPATIAL RESOLUTION.
