DATA COMPRESSION IS WIDELY RECOGNIZED AS A USEFUL TECHNIQUE IN THE CONSERVATION OF DISK SPACE, PARTICULARLY AS PERSONAL COMPUTERS DEVELOP INTO MULTIMEDIA WORK STATIONS, HANDLING IMAGES AND SOUND, AS WELL AS CONVENTIONAL SOURCE, OBJECT, AND DATA FILES.
