A new approach to combat identification using orthogonal sensor modalities is proposed that selectively uses 1D and 3D shape echo data, range resolved vibrometry and passive multi-band IR imaging to provide an Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) capabilityto meet Air Force mission objectives. CTI proposes to use the Air Force MLID vibrometry sensor together with the Army Research Laboratory dual-band FLIR to collect data against two combat vehicles under various aspect angles and states of occlusion. The1D and 3D echo data, the vibrometry data and IR data will be coregistered and probability of identification optimization strategies will be explored and documented. The Phase I Program examines the utility of micro-Doppler, shape echo and passive IRsignatures based on target aspect and spot location on target. CTI has recently developed robust multi-band passive signature enhancement algorithms which will be used to augment vibrometry and shape-echo data. Initial feature vector weighting functionswill be developed for subsequent refinement in a Phase II ATR effort. Potential applications include classification of ground & air vehicles and obstacles for all branches of the armed services for aircraft manned & autonomous navigation using highresolution 1D/2D/3D imaging sensors (FLIRs, ladars, SAR/ISAR); vibration signature diagnostics related to engine, computer-operated machine-tool (factory robotics), and bridge & structural fatigue for industrial and municipal interests.
