Abstract

Vadum will develop a vibration-enhanced detection and sensing system to identify buried landmines by exciting mechanical vibrations that are detectable using a sensitive radio-frequency (RF) ground-penetrating vibrometer. The system will induce vibrations in the target electromagnetically, stimulating specific modes that distinguish mines from other metal clutter. An innovative RF vibrometer per-forms detection using a high dynamic range architecture to measure weak vibration-induced modulation on the target response . The system will provide novel, orthogonal information to enhance existing sensors, enabling improvements in clutter discrimination, reduction of the False Alarm Rate (FAR), and safer, more efficient mine avoidance and de-mining operations.
