Abstract

In Phase I, Composite Technology Development, Inc. (CTD) proposes to demonstrate the feasibility of a linerless composite cryogenic tank design that will help reduce the system weight and increase the fuel carrying capability of airships or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), thus enabling Air Force missions requiring near-continuous persistence. CTD will select a novel material based on its superior microcrack resistance at cryogenic temperature and test an engineering model of a linerless cryogenic composite tank fabricated with this material to demonstrate performance and feasibility. Work in Phase I will also include design optimization of a full-scale tank, in collaboration with AeroVironment, an industry expert in UAVs.
