65862 Mercuric iodide (HgI2) is a semiconducting material suitable for applications in room-temperature spectroscopy, including applications in nuclear physics research. Although digital signal processing (DSP) methods would offer significant advantages over analog methods, DSP has not yet been optimized for HgI2 detectors. In this project, HgI2 pulse data will be used to develop signal processing algorithms with a computer emulation of the digital processing system. Phase I will collect and analyze HgI2 pulse data, develop and evaluate digital signal processing algorithms, and select an analog digital converter, DSP, and pre-amplifier. A preliminary design of the pre-amplifier and digital processing system will be developed for use with HgI2 detectors Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: While the most immediate commercial applications should be for improved HgI2 nuclear physics detectors, improved digital processors also should find applications in the general field of spectroscopy for law enforcement, criminal investigations, and the detection of drugs, explosives, and biological and chemical components.
