Abstract

UNDER IFR CONDITIONS, AIRPORT CAPACITY IS CURRENTLY LIMITED BY FAA SEPARATION STANDARDS BETWEEN AIRCRAFT. THESE STANDARDS ARE SET TO AVOID A LANDING ENCOUNTER WITH A VORTEX WAKE. IF AN ONBOARD VORTEX SENSOR AN ESCAPE SYSTEM COULD BE DEVELOPED WHICH IS BOTH RELIABLE AND INEXPENSIVE, THE A AVIATION COMMUNITY COULD BENEFIT BY DECREASED TERMINAL DELAYS WITHOUT COMPROMISING SAFETY. THE CONCEPT TO BE STUDIED WILL UTILIZE THE MEASURED RESPONSE OF AN AIRCRAFT AS A MEANS OF DETERMINING THE PROXIMITY OF A VORTEX WAKE AND THEN PROVIDE THE PILOT WITH ESCAPE MANEUVERS.
