Abstract
In Phase I, a demonstration SUpersonic Rain Erosion (SURE) facility was developed which demonstrated the capability of producing spherical, millimeter-sized droplets repeatedly at velocities up to 1200 feet per second. Data were collected to extend the speed range of the facility and droplet size. Based on these results, a Phase II prototype facility will be built that could attain speeds of 2400 fps with droplets up to 1-2 mm in diameter. Tests can be run on test articles as large as 4 square feet quickly and cost effectively because the SURE facility does not require a wind tunnel nor does it move the test article to simulate supersonic rain. A large range of rain environments can be simulated in the facility.
