Abstract

This program creates technology for health monitoring/diagnostics of fiber optic networks and isolating fiber faults to 1 cm resolution.The approach integrates fiber monitoring technology directly into the fiber optic transceivers.This strategy would create 100% fiber optic network coverage, with no disruption to the existing network infrastructure.The technology has built-in-test capability of link-loss, link-bandwidth, transceiver health monitors (temperature, laser voltage, electrical signal integrity) and optical time domain reflectometer fiber fault detection (OTDR) to 1 cm resolution.We will enable mil-avionic maintainers to isolate faults within the cable plant to a specific section of the pathway and specify the type of fault, reducing the time required for diagnostics.
