AbstractNot Available Advanced autonomous detection of chemical warfare agents and other organic materials has long been a major military concern and is becoming an increasingly realistic threat. Foster-Miller, Inc. proposes to develop a robust miniature mid-infrared spectrometer covering the atmospheric window wavelengths between 7.5 and 14.3 microns that features no moving parts and a low cost uncooled linear detector array. Optical performance capabilities approach those of an FTIR, making it possible to detect chemical agent plumes against a cold sky background. The entire spectrometer including optics and electronics will be about the size of a deck of playing cards and weigh less than 1 lb., allowing for eventual large scale, low cost manufacture. Our light-weight, high throughput wedge concept and monolithic construction lends itself to suitable air drop packaging for the intended application. The Phase I effort will fabricate a bench-top prototype and demonstrate required sensitivity for the stand-off detection. Once the optical instrument design parameters have been established, Foster-Miller will propose packaging and deployment concepts leading to a preliminary concept design of an engineering prototype for development and testing during Phase II.
