AbstractThe US Army's stated need is to devlop a low cost alternative to the CCU CPH display. The CCU is the first in a family of interoperable simulators for training a combined arms force in a real-time synthetic environment. The focus of the CCU is sustainment training for collective tasks and skills in command, control, comunication, and maneuver. Diamond Visionics Company (DVC) proposes a detailed investigation of the various alternatives capable of providing a low cost solution to the CCU Commander's Popped Hatch (CPH) display. The results of this research will allow DVC to make a recommendation on, and perform an analytical demonstration of, the selected approach. Candidate systems include helmet mounted displays, projection displays, direct view CRT displays, and flat panel displays. These and other solutions will be examined to see which best meets the CCU requirements. It is intended that the alternatives investigated be evaluated against a set of criteria developed jointly by DVC and STRICOM. These criteria include technical performance. cost, and supportability. Further, the alternative approaches will be compared to the current base line proposed/developed by the CCU prime contractor, so that an overall best approach can be determined. The military training and simulation market has long been awaiting a low cost large horizontal by small vertical field of view display. The specific applications in the commercial market might include automobile, truck. and bus driver trainers. Further, the entertainment industry is searching for the low cost display solution that provides the user with wrap around visual effects.
